In looking into the NETS -S the standards are similar to the teachers. One of the standards that I can incorporate into my lessons is the second one about communciation and collaboration. When students work together on projects, they will be able to produce orginial artifacts or solve problems (NETS-S, 2007). Also, within this standards, teachers can have students use a variety of methods to show how they understand the information (NETS-S 2007). If creating a PowerPoint, Excel page, digital storytelling, or a poster, students will be collobarating together to reach a common goal set within each lesson or day. Technology helps students become confident in their work and develop artifacts that can be shown on Youtube, Wiki pages, or any other media used for collaboration.
The second standard that I can use is research and information fluency. Students will have to develop skills necessary to become efficient using technology. I can instruct my student to become better at searching for topic or articles posted on the internet. With technology at the forefront of education, researching and problem solving seems to be a click away. With the appropriate teaching and understanding, technology can be students best way to problem solve, learn other cultures and become a more rounder students with the ability to find all the information.

Michael,
ReplyDeleteAfter reviewing the standards in both areas throughout this course I thought that it was nice that they truly aligned with many of the things that happen in the classroom already. The idea of using technology and innovative strategies on integrate into our curriculum is something that we should all make a point to do. Times are going to continue to change and that means the strategies and methods we use i the classroom must change also.

Michael,
ReplyDeleteI agree that teaching students to research and problem solve via the internet is important. One of my goals for the summer is to create some lessons on digital citizenship and digital literacy that any of the teachers at my school could use with their students. Many of our teachers require and expect students to use the internet but never teach them about it. Luckily, I work at a school where my principal is very supportive and seems to understand the importance.
You mentioned providing students opportunities to produce artifacts to demonstrate their learning. How often do you asign projects as a form of assessment? I have found that sometimes students prefer a traditional style test over a project. If you have encountered that issue, how have you addressed it?
It is nice to see that the NETS-T and NETS-S are aligned. So, as we as educators develop GAME plan to reach the NETS-T, we are also able to support and encourage our students to meet the NETS-S.

Michael,
ReplyDeleteI think you do a great job of relating success between you and your students. As you say, if teachers can accomplish the NETS-T standards, the students will have a better opportunity to accomplish the standards from the NETS-S. I can kind of relate how the two sets of standards are intertwined somewhat how successful teaching allows students to meet daily lesson objectives while demonstrating each objective through some form of assessment. If one is well done, then success for the second is more likely to follow. Nice work.

Michael,
ReplyDeleteI think you have come up with some great examples as to how to seamlessly incorporate the technology standards into your daily practice with your students. I agree that technology is a tool through which students may gain confidence by sharing their work with an authentic audience. I also believe it is important to teach "real world" skills such as researching and problem-solving through use of technology, and I think that it's important that we model these skills for our students as well.
I enjoyed your post!

Thanks to all for the comments. It is nice that the teacher's and student's standards align so nicely. We all have great points on how to use the standards as goals for students to achieve. I enjoyed every one's post. It is key that teachers relate technology to real world experience.
